Adapting Communication to Your Audience

Evaluates your ability to modulate your language, tone and level of detail according to the profile, context and needs of your interlocutor.

The audience adaptation test assesses a skill that is easy to underestimate: speaking to each person in a way they can actually take in. At work, the same message goes to an executive committee, an engineering team, a client in a hurry or an intern on day one. Each expects a different level of detail, register and set of examples. People who read their audience and adjust what they say save time, avoid stalemates and get heard well beyond their usual circle.

In 35 minutes, this online test puts you in front of a wide range of people: experts, beginners, colleagues from another culture, tense or silent counterparts. It shows how you pick your words, tone and channel depending on who you are addressing and in what setting. Candidates use it to benchmark themselves before an interview; recruiters use it to put evidence behind a skill that rarely shows on a CV.

What this test measures

  • Ability to gauge the other person's level of knowledge, priorities and expectations.
  • Choice of vocabulary and technical depth according to the audience, without changing the substance.
  • Adjustment of tone and register with senior management, a tense client or a close colleague.
  • Attention to the other person's reactions during the exchange and ability to redirect the conversation.
  • Preparation of the same content for different audiences, both spoken and written.

Examples of situations in the test

  1. 1Presenting the same project to engineers in the morning and to a sales team in the afternoon.
  2. 2Guiding a bank customer over the phone who is unfamiliar with digital tools and clearly worried.
  3. 3Running a workshop at a manufacturing company that brings together beginners and specialists on one topic.
  4. 4Writing directly to a senior executive you have never met to get a quick decision.

About this test

This test uses situational judgement tests (SJT), true/false questions and prioritisation exercises to assess your real behaviours. Each answer is weighted: there is no obvious "wrong" answer.

How to read your result

High result

A high score points to someone who quickly identifies who they are talking to and adjusts their message without losing its thread. They get through to experts and newcomers alike.

Result to develop

A score to develop shows that some audiences or settings are still harder to approach. The report pinpoints which ones and suggests practical ways to improve.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a message clarity test?

Clarity is about how a message is organised internally: its logic, priorities and structure. Audience adaptation is about the relationship with the person receiving it. A talk can be perfectly built and still be out of reach for a non-specialist audience. This test therefore focuses on how you take into account the profile, context and reactions of the person in front of you.

How should I prepare for the audience adaptation test?

There are no answers to memorise: options are weighted and several may look acceptable. The best preparation is to think back over recent conversations with very different people and what did or did not work. On the day, answer according to what you would really do, somewhere quiet and without interruptions.

Is this test relevant for roles with little client contact?

Yes. The scenarios also cover internal communication: explaining a technical subject to another department, onboarding a newcomer, addressing colleagues from another culture or senior management. A developer, an analyst or a buyer deals every day with people who share neither their vocabulary nor their priorities.

How can a recruiter use this test?

The company adds it to a recruitment campaign and invites candidates to take it online after signing in. Each candidate gets a random draw of 20 questions from a larger bank, to complete in 35 minutes. The AI-generated behavioural report covers strengths, areas for growth and recommendations, which helps prepare targeted interview questions.
