The CIPM, Certified Information Privacy Manager, is awarded by the IAPP, the International Association of Privacy Professionals. It holds a distinct place in the privacy credential landscape: where the CIPP family covers the law applicable in a given jurisdiction and the CIPT covers technical implementation, the CIPM covers running a privacy program. It certifies the person who has to make the thing work day to day, not only the person who understands it.
It addresses data protection officers, privacy program managers, lawyers who lead compliance, security managers who own its technical side, and internal auditors who assess it. Many DPOs pair it with a legal credential from the CIPP family, one supplying the legal frame and the other the ability to turn that frame into processes, indicators and evidence. The exam runs for 2 hours 30 and contains 90 multiple-choice questions, some attached to case studies, with no essay component. Scores are reported on a 100 to 500 scale with 300 required to pass.

Two thirds of the stems put the candidate in front of a concrete situation, a trade-off to settle or an incident to classify, because that is how the real exam assesses the ability to manage a program. Explanations spell out the expected reasoning and what rules the other options out. Repeat the quiz until you clear 75 per cent consistently before booking your attempt.
